A New Beginning

So starts another of my umpteen attempts to start and more elusively maintain a blog. This one like most of the others is a function of a boring vacation though this one also includes an internship with lots of spare time. I hope this attempt lasts longer than the others.

The point of this blog is to just let out a bit of steam on a lot of things I feel quite strongly about. As anyone who knows even a little bit will testify, this obviously means a lot of politics especially of the right wing variety. J However, I hope to write about other stuff too especially with the world cup coming up.

However, my first post deals with the EPL which is something I do not normally follow with any great deal of passion. However, the recent events surrounding the transfer of Fernando Torres to Chelsea from Liverpool have captured my interest. To be more specific, the vitriol laden reactions of various sets of fans. The reactions of two sets of fans gave captured my interest more than the rest though namely those of Liverpool and Manchester United

The reactions of Liverpool fans are of course the most predictable with accusations of disloyalty flying thick and fast. My doubt is whether any of them have ever reflected on exactly what kind of loyalty does Torres owe Liverpool. Here is a player born in the slums of Madrid who grew up idolizing unfashionable Atlectico Madrid and became their star player and talisman before he was lured away by Liverpool in 2007 with promises of more opportunities and probably better pay. This of course is exactly how Chelsea has got him now. A simple case of what goes around comes around. I would think that Torres discharged his debt to Liverpool with his excellent performances during the three years he played for them. The club however, failed miserably in giving him what it had promised. The position of Liverpool today in the English league is more or less the same as Atletico Madrid in La Liga. In such circumstances, why should this guy continue to play in the cold of Northern England is a question only Liverpool fans can answer.

The reactions of United fans are even more funny for the way they try to disguise their anger at their rival getting a better player. Accusations of buying the league are bandied about as usual forgetting the fact that also have lured away players with huge payments in the past. The examples that come to mind instantly are that of Berbatov and Rooney. It probably would have sounded much better if it came from fans of way smaller clubs who clearly do not have the resources to compete with the giants or even a club such as Arsenal. I am not criticizing Manchester United spending money on anyone but my point is basically that there is no reason to act holier than thou about anything. Every team has a right to try and compete with their available resources and there is no point in moaning about buying titles for then poor old Preston( the first ever double winners) have the right to moan the most.
